Secondhand Smoke (CDC)

Secondhand smoke is smoke from burning tobacco products from cigarettes, cigars or pipes. It is also smoke that has been exhaled by the person smoking.

Secondhand smoke can travel through multiunit housing through doorways, cracks in walls, ventilation systems, plumbing and electrical lines

Most children have the most exposure to secondhand smoke in their own homes.

  • Opening windows and using a fan will not completely get rid of secondhand smoke
  • Health effects on children:

    • More frequent and severe asthma attacks
    • Respiratory problems
    • Respiratory infections
    • An increased risk for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)
